No major news organization has ever operated from the Green Zone. This is much of why it costs so much to operate in Iraq -- out in the Red Zone, which is to say, Iraq, you've got to pay for guards, for blast walls, armored cars, the whole infrastructure. Plus interpreters, drivers. It does add up, but there's no choice. Independent journalism is very nearly impossible to do from inside the Green Zone.

If i were a headline writer for WaPo I would be really mad.

Really.. Katharine Weymouth wants headlines that are like Huffpo?

Huffpo is full of headlines about celebs and aliens. It's terrible sensationalist crap.

I *only* ever go there when someone sends a link.. otherwise forget it.

I can't believe Weymouth would actually want to imitate HuffPo.

Yikes.. i guess this really is the end of print journalism.

As a 35-year WaPo reader I can assure you it is going downhill. The Metro section is generally a carnival of amateurs. The old hands hold up the national news section; there are a few up and comers. The business section is somewhat of a local pinata, with good reason, but it is improving and benefits from being now in the latter part of the first section. Some columnists and many bloggers are, well, modestly endowed. The Website is such a mess layout wise--an opinion many WaPo staffers and almost any reader you ask will agree with.
The paper and its Website is poised to auger in. The Kaplan subsidiary is the only fount of growth and profit in the company.
